of our First Class cars also feature an upper-level glass
enclosed dome which features more seating. You haven't seen
it all until you've seen the panoramic views from an
air-conditioned streamliner dome car. Fresh fruit, pastries,
coffee and juice are provided on the outbound journey with
champagne and snacks served on the way back. Service of fine
spirits is available. It's our goal to make your trip as pleasureable as possible. A passenger service attendant will
attend to your every need - from drinks from the bar to a
blanket to snuggle in.

Streamliners
From the years immediately following World War II through
the mid 1950s, American railroads embarked on one of the
most ambitious, all encompassing and expensive re-equipment
programs in the history of any industry for their major
passenger trains to have the ability to compete with
airplanes and cars. The railroads purchased thousands of the
most comfortable, luxurious and modern rail passenger cars
ever designed from American Car and Foundry, the Edward G.
Budd Company and Pullman Standard. The immediate result was
the most magnificent and opulent fleet of streamliners and
domeliners ever to grace this planet. Domes and the
cruiseliner concept added a new dimension to overland
travel, transforming "getting there" into a destination in
itself. Whether viewing Mount Hood or Mount Shasta from the
Shasta Daylight, Feather River Canyon and the Rockies from
the California Zephyr or Tehachapi from the San Francisco
Chief, all compared favorably with any attractions in their
fabled San Francisco destination. Unfortunately, in the
longer term, this massive investment proved no match for
indirectly taxpayer subsidized competition, first from the
airlines and later from the Interstate Highway System. With
the railroads facing financial ruin, most of the trains
began losing their luster by the mid 1960s. Within a few
years a grand era was gone forever. Well, almost forever.

Unsurpassed Views
The highlight of a trip on the dome car is the views. You'll
feel like you're one with the scenery. The dome car provides
the only seat on the train that looks forward. Before dome
cars that priviledge was only for the engineer.
Cheese With Your Wine?
Enjoy fresh fruit and pastries during the northbound
journey in the morning. On the way back, nibble on cheese
and crackers along with a champagne toast - or service from
the bar including beer and yes, wine.
Name Train
The Grand View Dome Car ran as a Vista Dome Coach on the
famed California Zephyr, arguably one of the most popular
trains of all time. The car was sold to Amtrak in 1971 then
joined the Alaska Railroad in 1984. After changing owners
and being leased to various railroads nearly every year from
1986 to 2002, the Grand Canyon Railway acquired this classic
dome coach in 2004. The seats inside the Grand View running
on the Grand Canyon Railway are original, upstairs and
downstairs. The Zephyr cars can be easily identified by the
linear fluted skirting on sprung hinges at the bottom of the
car.
